Bipolar Disorder Newsletter
Since I opened my private practice in 2004, I have discovered that at least one third of the clients presenting for treatment come to me with the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. There is some controversy over why so many people are being diagnosed with this disorder: (1) Are there that many more people that truly have Bipolar Disorder as compared to 10, 15, or 20 years ago? (2) Are people being labeled with Bipolar Disorder in order to be able to justify long-term treatment? (3) Are the drug companies encouraging this diagnosis in order to push their medications? (4) Has diagnostic testing evolved to where more people can be diagnosed? There are no definitive answers to these questions for everyone has their own opinion and biases.
What I feel comfortable saying is that most of the people I see do have a cluster of distinctive symptoms that are generally agreed upon as strongly indicating a disorder now called Bipolar I or II. Since I am not a psychiatrist and I cannot prescribe psychiatric medications, it matters little what you call it. I choose to focus on each person's symptoms and interpersonal issues and I help them deal with these issues more effectively. I see my job as helping the client be the best person they can be and to have the best quality of life possible.
Bipolar Psychotherapy Group
One of the interventions I utilize to help others with the diagnosis is through a group in my office for people with Bipolar Disorder. During this 90 minute group, I present educational material and information and insight into Bipolar Disorder. I teach relaxation, meditation, stress management, anger management, and coping skills. However, the main objective of the group is for the individuals to have an opportunity to share their stories and problems with others with the same diagnosis. Those women who are currently part of this group have found this invaluable.
